POPULAR USES
ANDIROBA oil is one of the most sold medicinal oils in the Amazon. Mixed with honey and copaiba it is a very popular anti-inflammatory medication to combat throat infections in general. It also strengthens and embellishes the hair and in the form of soap acts as a remedy to combat acne and pimples. Due to its good skin penetration, it is often used in massage to relieve bruises, dislocations and acts also to soothe the skin surface and bleach superficial stains.
The BACURI fruit is highly demanded in the markets of Brazil and used for the preparation of sweets, cakes, jams, juices, and ice creams. Its seeds are not used and are discarded. The local population s of the central region of the Marajó island have great difficulty removing the butter from the seeds because the seeds must be soaked in water for over a year. They are then boiled, and the butter is skimmed off the surface of the boiling water.
The BACURI butter has phytotherapeutic applications and is popularly used on Marajó as a remedy against spider and snake’s bites, as a treatment for skin problems and earaches. The butter of Bacuri gives a golden tone to the skin. It is absorbed a few minutes after it is applied and the skin becomes velvety to the touch; it also removes spots and reduces scarring.
The oil of PRACAXI, which is extracted in a rudimentary way through cooking the dry mass and macerating it in a mortar, is popularly used against skin infection, as well as in the treatment of hair, which leaves it easier to comb and intensifies its brightness, avoiding hair loss.
Pracaxi bio-oil use was common to treat stretch marks in adolescences and pregnant with very satisfactory results. The inhabitants of the Amazon region make use of the stem bark to combat the effects of poison from snake and scorpion bites. For this, the bark is soaked and applied in the form of a plaster on the site of the bite. Today the seeds are collected in rivers, streams, and beaches, sun-dried, and stored for selling.
The Tucuma bio oil (Astrocaryum vulgare) extracted from the pulp contains 25.6% saturated fatty acids and 74.4% unsaturated fatty acids composed of palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acids. As it is rich in omega 3, 6, and 9, it is a good moisturizer and is used in cosmetics in skin moisturizers, body lotions, and products for damaged hair.
Tucuma oil is also an excellent emollient that spreads well. The value of beta-carotene (which is 180 to 330 milligrams/100g oil) is more concentrated in the oil than in the pulp.The fiber has many uses, the leaves provide a very resistant fiber, ideal for basketry, the seeds are used in handicrafts and the fruits are consumed raw or in the form of a juice called “wine of Tucuma,” which is mixed with water or made into ice cream. The pulp is very nutritious containing one of the highest concentrations of provitamin A “beta-carotene” (52 milligrams per 100 g pulp), equaling the value found in the pulp of buriti. In comparison, the concentration of beta carotene in carrots is 6.6 milligrams/100 g pulp. Its oil is used in cooking and in massages.
